Whereabouts is a map of your home that knows where everything is: scan a room, ask where anything is, down to what's inside each drawer, and be guided to them. This page is the quick start, the answers to common questions, and where to write when something goes wrong.
Write to us: computervision226@gmail.com. Say which room it happened in, what you said or tapped, and what the app said back; a screen recording, with the microphone on, catches most of it. We answer within two working days.
What it needs
- An iPhone running iOS 17 or later. Mapping a room with Scan room needs LiDAR, which the Pro and Pro Max models have (every one since the iPhone 12 Pro); finding things, pinning places by hand and everything else works on any iPhone.
- No family member with a Pro yet? You can start alone: Add by hand works on any iPhone, entirely by voice: point the phone at a drawer or shelf, save a place there, and say what's in it. Use finds its way to those places the same way.
- An account, made in the app with your email address: a code sent to that address confirms it. The account is where your rooms are kept and how they reach the phones and the computer you choose.
- Nothing to install on the computer: the editor is a web page that opens in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.
Getting started
- Make an account. Tap the gear icon, then Account, and create one with your email and a password of at least 8 characters. Type in the code from the email we send (check the spam folder if it doesn't arrive within a minute).
- Scan a room (an iPhone Pro). Choose or make a space, tap Scan room, start at the doorway, and move slowly with the phone at chest height: the walls first, then the furniture, then shelves and tables. Open drawers and closets on the way and tap Look inside, holding the phone about half a meter from the opening. Tap Name this and say what something is called at home ("Mom's chair"): the map keeps your word for it. Come back to the door and tap Done scanning; if the walls don't meet yet or you're far from the door, the app says what to do first (tap Done again to finish anyway). Claude then names what was seen. Pause stops the clock, the item spotting and the photos while you answer the door. A photo with someone in it is never kept. Your first minute of mapping is free: a countdown shows while you scan, and when it runs out the scan saves itself with what it has. The first time, six tips show before the scan; they're back any time from the gear icon.
- Find things. Tap Find, hold the phone up at chest height, and say what you're looking for ("Where are my keys?") or pick it from the list. You hear where it is, then turn-by-turn directions around the furniture, with a warning before anything in the way, and in the last half meter your hand is guided to it. "Take me to the door", "Where am I?", "I put my keys here", "I took it", "Read the label" and "Help" work too.
- Open it on the computer. Go to visionmap.store/editor in any browser and sign in with the same email and password: the room appears as a floor plan and in 3D, where you can rename things, add notes, fix the plan, and share the room with your family by their email. Ask (top right) is a chat with Claude about the room: where things are, what could be easier to find, what's usually in a room like this, where it's crowded. It needs Plus, like Claude in Find. The same editor is in the app: on the home screen, Edit on screen opens it, already signed in.
For families
One person scans and keeps the rooms up to date; the rooms appear on the phone of the person who finds things in them, and stay up to date. In the editor, share a room with someone's account by email, either to see it or to see and make changes. When something can't be found, or isn't where the map said, the family hears about it in the app, and by a notification if alerts are turned on.
Minutes and Plus
The first room (a minute of mapping) is free for every account. After that, mapping with Claude naming what it sees is paid for by the minute: buy minutes in the app as you need them, in any number; they never expire. Whereabouts Plus is a monthly or yearly subscription for Use: it lets Claude find things the phone can't see and read labels, on your phone and in every room you share, so one subscription covers a family's finding and reading. Prices are shown in the app before you buy. Finding your way with the maps you have stays free.
- Buying minutes: gear icon, Claude, Buy minutes. A secure Stripe payment page opens in Safari, where you choose how many; they're on your account within seconds of paying, and the app shows the mapping left under Claude.
- Getting Plus: the same screen, Get Plus. Plus is on for your account within seconds of paying. If the app says minutes or Plus can't be bought here yet (they're sold in the app on the US App Store and in TestFlight), write to us.
- Changing or cancelling Plus: the link in the emails Stripe sends you (or Change or cancel Plus on the app's Minutes and Plus screen). Plus stays on until the end of the period you've paid for.
- What Plus includes: a generous number of photos for Claude in Find each month; the app tells you how many are left.
In Arabic
The app is in English until you choose: gear icon, Language, العربية (or As the iPhone, to follow the iPhone's language). Everything on screen and everything said changes at once, voice commands and searches work in Arabic, and Claude names things in Arabic. For a better voice, download an Enhanced or Premium Arabic voice in the Settings app under Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices.
Deleting your account
Gear icon, Account, Delete account…. Your photos, maps, rooms and account are deleted; rooms you shared leave the phones they were shared with. If you have Plus, cancel it first (the app reminds you). You can also email us to have an account deleted. The privacy policy says exactly what's kept and what isn't.
If something goes wrong
- The code email doesn't arrive
- Look in the spam folder, wait a minute, and tap to send it again. If it never comes, write to us with the address you used.
- Find never recognizes the room
- Turn on the lights you normally use, stand where the scan started (usually the doorway), hold the phone up, and turn slowly for 10 to 20 seconds. A room that has changed a lot can take longer; scanning it again fixes it for good.
- "Scan room" says the minutes are used up
- The free minute, and any minutes bought, are used up; see Minutes and Plus. Rooms you already have keep working.
- The desk was tidied, the shelf rearranged
- No need to scan the whole room again: in Add by hand, once the room is recognized, point at the spot and tap Scan spot again. Claude names what's there now; what's new is added and what moved is moved (nothing is removed, in case the photo missed it). It counts as 15 seconds of mapping.
- A new scan came out worse than the last one
- Open the room in the editor and, with nothing selected, click Restore previous scan: the plan, the things and the map of the scan before come back, and the phones take them at their next sync. The newer scan is kept in turn, so you can switch back.
- Claude didn't name things, or took too long
- Check the connection and try again in a minute. The scan is kept either way: things the phone recognized on its own are named, and you can rename anything in its details or in the editor.
- A direction or a warning came late, or not at all
- Guidance works alongside a white cane or a guide dog, not instead of them: it can miss a low step, a glass door, or something at head height off to the side, and sees much less of what's in the way on an iPhone without LiDAR. Please tell us what happened, with the room and what was said: that's how it gets better.
